Is this a charity event? Do I need to fund-raise?
No, not all rallies are for charity. This one is just for fun of it, for the adventure and camaraderie. It's a rally because we travel as a supported group, and stay together each night. You can split when you want a break, and you travel at your own pace, as long as you can get to minimum zones each day (else you won't finish in 7days!). And people can't be too far apart, if we need to assist anyone.

How far do we travel each day?
About 100km. Shortest 74, longest 134km. Although you're free to stop where you like, as long as you're not far behind the main group (and in front of the sweep boat).

Where do we park our cars and trailers?
We've arranged for parking within the compound of a secure storage business, in Mannum.

Do I have to camp the whole way?
You'll need to camp the first 2 nights on the river (a handful could get cabins the first night. Availability limited), but after that there is accommodation options all the way. And many public toilets, or toilets at cafe/pubs, etc. A desired location could sell out of cabins/rooms, eg. Cobdogla or Swan Reach Hotel, but there are other options before and after those locations. The detail of your accommodation options and their contact details will be provided once you enter.

How far between fuel stops?
The longest distance without a fuel station is 189km, between Wentworth and Customs House Houseboats (SA/VIC Border). Along the way we'll have a vehicle carrying unleaded fuel, available to rally participants at the same price as Customs House Houseboats (usually $2.30L). This way you only need a 130km fuel range, which is sufficient for the rest of the journey. If you never want to have to walk to get fuel (riverside pumps), you need a 171km range.

Is there a support vehicle to carry my gear?
You carry everything in your boat with you, the support vehicles are there to assist with any problems that may arise.

Is this rally suitable for first-time campers?
If you’ve never camped before, this rally’s probably not the best place to start. It’s remote, rugged, and built for those already comfortable off-grid.

Is there any concerns with large boats?
The are a few areas where the whole river width is shallow, and nearly everyone will hit some sand under the water. Even a small tinny. The river has changed in a few places since the 2022-23 floods, and the maps haven't been updated. If your boat requires deep water due to its draft, there is more chance of hitting sand in the first place. And more chance of becoming temporarily stuck, requiring some pushing (shovel/paddle is usually sufficient). For example, all but the smallest houseboats cannot navigate the full route unless there was a high river (above average flow). Trailer-able pontoon boats go through. You may want to carry a spare prop, to not risk ending the trip early.

What if my boat breaks down during the rally?
-
First port of call: reach out to fellow participants—there’s usually someone nearby with tools, know-how, or a spare part to get you moving again.
-
If you need further help - you'll have the organiser's phone number (amongst the group), he'll co-ordinate the support vehicles. Or just wait for the sweep boat, depending on the issue. If we can't fix it, we can tow it with the sweep boat or put it on our trailer if it fits (up to 7m V-bottom), to get it to the nearest town with a marine mechanic or the required part. Basically, we'll do our best to keep you moving.
If you're too remote for repairs, or there is no solution:
-
We’ll help you leave your boat at a good location for later pickup, and you can hitch a ride with other participants to keep enjoying the rally.
-
If your boat fits on our trailer, we’ll load it up and bring it along.
-
Or we’ll run you back to your car and trailer at the finish so you can retrieve your vessel when ready.

Can I bring my kids?
Absolutely—just make sure they’re up for outdoor living.

Can I bring my dog?
No. The first 2 days are along the Murray Sunset National Park, and you have to camp at least one night in it.

Can I drink alcohol while driving?
Participants must comply with all laws governing alcohol and drug use, including those relating to vessel operation.

What's required as a toilet when free camping?
After the first 2 days it will be easy to access public toilets as well as toilets at hotels, accommodation, etc, and at some campsites.
The first 2 nights are bush camping, a camp toilet such as a folding stool style (bagged) or chemical camping toilet is recommended. If you intend to bury your human waste, you need to carry a decent sized shovel and must dig at least 20cm and bury all paper. We'll leave no trace. Don't be that person that wrecks it for everyone.

Can we have campfires?
In the Murray Sunset National Park and most campsites along the way, fires are permitted except on days of Total Fire Ban. On those days gas cookers can still be used for preparing food.

Could I continue on to the mouth of the Murray?
Absolutely! Cars and trailers will be parked in a secure parking, pay $65 to extend it for up to 1 week and then on the Monday continue along the river in to Lake Alexandra. It's about 155km to the mouth but Lake Alexandra is often choppy thanks from wind, so allow sufficient time. Once you return to Mannum in 2-4 days you can tie-up at the Mary Ann Reserve boat ramp and walk 1.5km to the secure parking, grab your car and trailer, and return to get your boat. Return access FOB in Mannum. On the Sunday when the rally ends there is no walking required, we ferry your driver by vehicle to your car and trailer.

When signing up on the website, does everyone in my boat need to enter at the same time?
No, each person can enter themselves when they like, they just need to input the same 'team name' so I know who is in the same boat. You can also enter multiple people at once, whatever you like.

Do I have to pay the entry fee upfront?
You can pay in full upon sign-up, or a $200 deposit and pay the balance 1 month prior to the event.
