BOATS
-
Boat: Any boat you like! Just keep in mind that the bigger the boat, the more chance you could get stuck on sand in the shallow areas. Can normally push of with shovel or paddle. Jet-skis and speed boats welcome, but max speed for the event is 60km/h. And you'll need to do a minimum speed, refer below.

Speed: Needs to do at least 30km/h when fully loaded, ideally 37km/h / 20 knots. Max speed permitted in the rally is 60km/h, this is not a race! Say for small boats you’d want at least 30hp, for a pontoon boat 100hp. Houseboats are too big and slow. Contact me if unsure.

Equipment: Camp gear, folding trolley for fuel cans (Up to 500m walk to some petrol stations), spare prop, first aid kit and the all the mandatory boating safety equipment for inland waters. Toilet for first 2 nights camping - shovel or camp toilet. Refer FAQs for more detail.

Navigation (Helpful for shallow areas or under water obstacles):
- Digital: “Murray River access guides” by Spatial Vision, viewable on the Avenza app. Or Navionics by Garmin.
- Paper: ‘River Murray Charts’ covers until Renmark, and ‘Murray River Pilot’ from SA/NSW border to the river mouth/Coorong. The printed ‘Murray River access guides’ by Spatial Vision can be found at some info centres and map stores.

Communication: Mobile phone on the Telstra network. There is a patch of around 50km between Wentworth and Customs house where there is no coverage, and it can be patchy in other places. Other Network providers have less coverage in this area. I’d recommend a PLB or EPIRB in case of emergency, the sweeper boat could be a long way behind and isn’t an ambulance.
Sweeper Boat has Starlink to communicate with support crew, or for emergencies.

Insurance: Third-party liability boat insurance.
