Boats
and
equipment
-
Boat: Pretty much any boat you like! As long as it's trailer-able, under 8m long, and no Wake boats. Just keep in mind that the bigger the boat, the more chance you could get stuck on sand in the shallow areas. You can normally push off with a shovel or paddle. Jet-skis and speed boats welcome, but max speed for the event is 50km/h.
-
Speed: Needs to do at least 30km/h, ideally 35-40km/h or around 20 knots. Say for small boats you’d want at least 30hp, because you'll probably be carrying more weight than you ever have. For a pontoon boat; 100hp minimum. Contact me if unsure.
-
Fuel Range: You need to carry enough fuel to travel 189km, which is 60-100L for most boats. If you have a small boat and we learn on day 1 that it's loaded too heavy to get onto the plane, one of the support vehicles can carry some of your fuel cans. Although it's in your interest to be self sufficient with the 189km range because for the rest of the journey this will enable you to buy fuel only at the riverside pumps, or the one fuel pump that is 100m from the water. Otherwise you'll have to walk for fuel a few times, and up to 700m in some locations (folding trolley recommended).
-
Equipment required:
-Camp gear.
-Hand trolley for fuel cans.
-EPIRB or PLB, or Starlink.
-First-aid kit.
-All the mandatory boating safety equipment for inland waters (we'll send the list).
-Toilet for first 2 nights camping; any type of camp toilet, or shovel. Refer FAQs for more detail.
-
Communication: We recommend that at least one phone in your group is on Telstra although even with Telstra, there is a patch of around 50km between Wentworth and Customs house where there is no phone coverage. Hence we require you to have either a EPIRB or PLB, or Starlink.
Note that the Sweep Boat and one of the Support Vehicles both have Starlink, to coordinate mechanical support or for emergencies.
-
Insurance required: Third-party liability boat insurance.
